We're a fashion label with a responsible yet unconventional approach to style. Our style statement is not limited to the bold and beautiful products we create but is also flaunted in the ethical, sustainable and vegan business practices we follow. Our global brand, Funky Kalakar is not just about being different, but also about making a difference. Funky means being unconventional and Kalakar translates to the artist, which is exactly who we are, the “Unconventional Artist”. We look to fuse styles from across cultures to bring together handcrafted products that are unique, responsible and beautiful.
As the unconventional artist, we work with materials, designs, and processes that are different. We bring together modern ideas with traditional techniques to create unique products that possess the sentiments we stand for. Driven by a great love for our planet and all the life it bears, we work towards creating sustainable, vegan products in an ethical manner. It's not just the products and processes that matter to us. We also strive to empower our people, we work with skilled artisans and cobblers who often come from underprivileged sections of society, by providing them a fair wage and safe environment and offer our customers products which give them the ability to make ethical and responsible choices.
Being PETA certified vegan and pro-sustainability means that we try to imbibe these principles in our business. From production to packaging, material to finishing we try and find solutions that reflect what we stand for. We save tires from heading to landfills and give our shoes a renewed sole, we've used surplus foam discarded by auto manufacturers to bring in a comfort to your feet, we are handcrafting our shoes and handbags which are completely vegan and even our packaging supports fair-trade self-help groups. We are constantly exploring sustainable materials and try to incorporate an eco-friendly element with each new launch. In addition, we encourage our customers to send back our product for recycling, at the end of its lifecycle.
Launched in London, United Kingdom (UK) in 2016, we are now present in six countries - Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, India, and USA. Although, through our online store, we have been able to reach out to customers across the globe.
Our supporters lovingly refer to our shoes as the “Funkies” which is a growing symbol of sustainable fashion. We unite with them towards creating a better tomorrow and hope you join us on this mission too.
Funky Kalakar is founded on the pillars of sustainability, veganism, transparency, and empowerment. It is these values that drive our people, processes and products.
Sustainability - We have just one planet to live on, and we must, therefore, look after it. We at Funky Kalakar have adopted a sustainable approach to fashion. As a conscious business, we seek to benefit both people and the planet. Our Shoe Collections find their sole in upcycled tires. Our handbags too are completely vegan and recyclable. Our commitment here does not stop at our products, our packaging is plastic-free, using paper tape made from corn starch. Additionally, each package comes with a reusable canvas tote made by a fair-trade self- help organization, to encourage our customers to refrain from plastic bags. We are always trying to find out how we can get better, helping both our planet and our customers.
Veganism - Live and let live, is yet another principle we follow. We believe that all life is precious and hence we offer products that do not harm any living creatures. Fashion should not come at the cost of any living being, it should instead reflect the times, technology and the beauty of the planet we live on. Strengthening our commitment to veganism, we are happy to announce that we are now a PETA certified organization.
Transparency - Being transparent allows us to offer all stakeholders a better understanding of what we do and truly see its value. We prefer dealing with fair trade organizations and are very open about all our dealings. In keeping with this principle, we not only share information on the materials and processes used but also a breakdown of the product costs with our customers.
Empowerment - It is not merely enough to know our responsibilities. One must also have the power to fulfil them. To us, empowerment is two-fold, directed towards the people that produce as well as our supporters who purchase. We collaborate with NGOs and self-help groups that echo our values. Our shoes, for instance, are handcrafted by underprivileged cobblers in Mumbai, packaging bags come from a women's self-help group which is fair trade certified whereas block printing is done by rural skilled artisans.
By offering our customers a responsible choice, we empower them to make responsible decisions.
